Long-Term Histologic Changes in Nasal Mucosa after Total Laryngectomy

چکیده

This recently published interesting paper [1] showed statistically significant reduction (P < .005) in congestion of inferior turbinate mucosa in 2 groups of post-total laryngectomy patients over a period of time (group 1; less than 12 months, group 2; 12–36months). I am intrigued as to which statistical test was used to calculate this and the other P values, since it was not mentioned in the study. Also, I wonder what the authors’ and readers’ opinions are with regards to the time intervals at which biopsies were taken postoperatively. Could the other histological indices have born a statistically significant difference between the groups, where shorter time intervals are to be used (e.g., 3, 6, and 9 months)? The references cited by the authors themselves certainly do not seem to observe any standard established time frames. It would be interesting to gauge readers’ opinion on these matters.

Long-Term Histologic Changes in Nasal Mucosa after Total Laryngectomy

Objective. To determine the long-term histopathologic changes in nasal mucosa and the relationship between progression of the histopathologic changes and the duration without air current stimulation. Material and Method. Biopsies were taken from the inferior turbinates of 11 laryngeal cancer patients after total laryngectomy. Specimens were stained with hematoksilen-eosin and several histopatho...

Histopathological Changes in Tracheal Mucosa Following Total Laryngectomy.

The aim of this study was to determine the long term histopathologic changes in tracheal mucosa after a total laryngectomy , and to find out the relationship between the progression of histopathologic changes in tracheal mucosa and the duration of breathing through the tracheostomy. Tracheal mucosal biopsies were taken from a total of 35 patients, of both sexes, who underwent a total laryngecto...

The prevention of post-laryngectomy olfactory mucosa degeneration Prevencija degeneracije olfaktorne sluznice nakon totalne laringektomije

medicina fluminensis 2016, Vol. 52, No. 1, p. 43-48 43 Abstract. Olfactory rehabilitation after a laryngectomy is based on establishing nasal airflow to allow odorant molecules to come into contact with the olfactory mucosa. Currently, the polite yawning technique (PYT) is the gold standard for post-laryngectomy olfactory rehabilitation, but it is usually introduced in patient’s rehabilitation ...

Exhaled and nasal nitric oxide in laryngectomized patients

BACKGROUND Nitric oxide (NO) shows differing concentrations in lower and upper airways. Patients after total laryngectomy are the only individuals, in whom a complete separation of upper and lower airways is guaranteed. Thus the objective of our study was to assess exhaled and nasal NO in these patients. METHODS Exhaled bronchial NO (FENO) and nasal nitric oxide (nNO) were measured in patient...
